October was all about spiders and spooky

Spider studies, healthy eating and Halloween.

We have been learning about spiders throughout the month as you saw in the project that came home. We have also started discussing the various food groups and which foods in our lunches come from each food group.
For the next week or so we will be building our halloween vocabulary. We will draw a haunted house and write about it. We will also create a monster and talk about them with our classmates.
In the next several weeks we will be learning about the forest as well as the beginning, middle and end of stories.

Math- How numbers relate

This is a game we have been playing to reinforce the relationship of numbers. In this version of the game, the students are practicing how number relate to 5. For example 8 is 3 more than 5 and 4 is 1 less than 5. This concept is important for easy adding and subtracting, as it supports us to do mental math. If I know that 8 is 3 more than 5 and I am trying to add 37 + 8. I can divide up the problem to add 3 to 37 to get 40 and then 5 more for the sum of 45.

Even if students are already adding and subtracting, some have difficulty with this game as it requires students to explain the relationship of the numbers rather than just retelling a memorized fact. With this kind of flexibility of thinking, students will be stronger and more confident in math.

Ed Inform

Recently on Ed Inform, I have added pictures to Number Sense and Science. At this point in the year, I am just sharing evidence with you about the learning opportunities that your child is practicing and when needed, I am including ways you can support your child. As the year progresses, I will add more detailed comments and observations about how your child is progressing.

Halloween

Please send costumes in a bag on Thursday so that your child can change after they play outside. This prevents any rips or damage to the beloved costumes.
Please keep all weapons at home for the evening festivities.
Please restrict candy to 1 piece in their lunch.

Friday will be a pj day.

What you can do at home:

Over the next two weeks here are some things to help your child's school day go more smoothly:
  1. Try to maintain bedtimes and healthy eating as much as possible through the Halloween season.
  2. Please limit candy to 1 treat in their lunches and save others for after school.
  3. Please talk yo your child about sensitive ways to talk about the treats in their lunches, not all children are allowed to have treats in their lunches or may not have gone trick or treating for as long or visited  as affluent homes. We endeavour to be sensitive to others experiences and feelings.
