Home reading and story writing

Home Reading

The children chose 2 books from their reading basket to bring home to read. The books are due back every Wednesday so that they can be sure that they are reading a variety of books. To help keep our books in good condition, please keep the books in their book bag in a safe place at home. 

If your child is ready to change the books more often, just send the books back and they can switch the books during the reading block. 


Storytelling and Fairy Tales

We are continuing to work on telling stories with character, place, problem and solution. We are beginning to talk about fairy tales and what they have in common. Fairy tales usually have a mean/ wicked character, magic/ talking animals and they have a moral to the story.

Next week we will read a version of Beauty and the Beast.  

Math

We have been working with 2D shapes. The students are really capable of describing shapes to each other. We played a game where on partner picked a shape from a bag and showed it to the partner. The second partner picked a shape, kept it hidden and had to tell their partner how the shapes were similar and different. 

After the students were very comfortable describing the shapes, we began the game "Guess my rule." The students worked in partners again. The partners worked on opposite sides of the room to sort shapes. When they sorted the shapes they got their partner and asked the partner "Quel est mon règle?" The partner then had to explain the sorting rule that their partner used. The grade 1's sort by 1 attribute and the grade 2's by 2 or more attributes. The attributes that the children used to sort the shapes are size, colour, shape, or thickness. 


With our morning math baskets we continue to work on number sense and place value for numbers to 100.

Here are some of the learning activities that I have been updating this week:
  • videos of your child reading, if you haven't seen it.
  • pictures of place value either showing numbers as 10's and 1's or lining up random numbers on a numberline.
  • a picture of shapes sorted by colour, shape, size or thickness.  Grade 2 students should sort shapes by 2 or more of these attributes. 
  • a writing sample also came home that is associated with our shape unit.  

What you can do at home:

  1. Listen to your children read their home reading books. Instead of relying on asking your child to sound out new words ask your child what is happening in the picture that makes sense for the word that starts with " the beginning letter of the word".
  2. Reread any fairy tales that you may have at home or take some out of the library. Ask your child to identify the character, wicked character, if there is magic and what the moral is in the story. 
  3. Play "Guess my rule" at home. 
  4. Ask about the story that your child has been writing. Who are the characters? Who is the mean character? What is the problem for the characters? How are you going to solve the problem?

  Our grade 2 class We have a straight grade 2 class. It is a busy class and everyone is eager to learn and start our time together.I enjoyed meeting the students today and noticed many established friendships and some new budding ones as well.  We will spend the first few weeks talking about our school community and establishing routines for our time together.  School supplies Please send in the school supplies as soon as you have them. Our First Full Week!

  Literacy We have started our class learning routines and activities this week. The children are practicing reading on our own. They find a spot to sit in class and put a mat down. The children pick 2-3 books that they practice reading several times.  To practice reading the children are: getting their mouth ready to say the letter sound rereading new words to blend the letter sounds together e.g. R-o-s-ie becomes Ro-sie then Rosie checking that the words that they say make sense in the story. If there are more than 2 words on a page that they do not know, then they should change their book for something that is easier and still provides a challenge.  The blue bins, pictured on the bottom shelf, are activities that support oral language, sight word recognition and spelling. Art Cards, Science and Social Studies

Art Cards We have started out Art Cards! Social Studies and Health One of the Big Ideas, a focus, for grade 2 is the diverse regions of Canada. As a beginning  to this unit we made a map of the school grounds. We then looked at Canada using google maps and zoomed in to our school. We were able to compare our map with what we saw on the screen.  Over the school year we will be looking in more detail at different regions of Canada. Over the next few weeks we will be talking about the food we grow on the Island. This will lead to conversations and comparisons with the prairies, what grows on the prairies, the animals and geography of that region of Canada.  As we are talking about food, we will be reading and retelling the story of La petite poule rousse. (The Little Red Hen). We will also be talking about healthy foods vs snack and treat food.   As we approach Halloween could you please limit candy to 1 item per day if that is your practice to include candy in your child's lunch.
