Friendship week and 100th day Feb 14-17

Hello everyone!

We have a very busy week planned for next week. Next week we will be focusing on Friends and Friendship.

Valentine's day

The grade 6/7's have a fundraiser that will come home in the agenda's Tuesday February 7th. They are offering to prepare a class set of Valentine's for your child to hand out on February 14th. The cost is $10. 

For those families who would like to make their own cards, I have attached a link to a class list. Please send a card for each member of the class. Also this year we have many allergies and sensitivities including children who are sensitive to sugar. Please do not attach a candy, chocolate or lollipop to the cards. Thank you.


100th day

I will send home a "cape" with your child later this week. The cape is in a ziploc bag that includes instructions, a 10 frame and a rectangle of plastic. The goal is for your child to attach 100 items to the cape for our celebration of 100 days at school on February 15th. The 10 frame is to help your child to count out the 100 items as groups of 10. 
You can support your child by listening as your child counts in French. If they need support counting there are Youtube videos on counting under the "songs we are singing" tab. In the grade 1 math curriculum, the children count by 10 to 100 in French. It helps with the vocabulary they will need for grade 2 when they are adding numbers between 20-100. 
Please attach the capes with safety pins to your child's clothes on Wednesday morning February 15. We will have a day filled with counting to 100 and we will celebrate that we are all 100 days smarter!

Friendship Friday

To finish our Friendship week, we will have a Friendship Fruit salad on Friday February 17th. On that day could you please send 1/2- 1 fruit cut up that we can put in the salad. Also the children will need a spoon and a bowl in their lunch kit that day.

  1. Valentine's Day February 14th
  2. 100th day celebration Feb. 15. 
  3. Skating February 16th- Helmets mandatory and as many parents as possible are welcome. 48 skates are a lot of laces to tie :)
  4. Friendship Fruit Salad Feb. 17th
  5. Showcase evening February 23rd 6-7pm- more information to come home.

  Our grade 2 class We have a straight grade 2 class. It is a busy class and everyone is eager to learn and start our time together.I enjoyed meeting the students today and noticed many established friendships and some new budding ones as well.  We will spend the first few weeks talking about our school community and establishing routines for our time together.  School supplies Please send in the school supplies as soon as you have them. Our First Full Week!

  Literacy We have started our class learning routines and activities this week. The children are practicing reading on our own. They find a spot to sit in class and put a mat down. The children pick 2-3 books that they practice reading several times.  To practice reading the children are: getting their mouth ready to say the letter sound rereading new words to blend the letter sounds together e.g. R-o-s-ie becomes Ro-sie then Rosie checking that the words that they say make sense in the story. If there are more than 2 words on a page that they do not know, then they should change their book for something that is easier and still provides a challenge.  The blue bins, pictured on the bottom shelf, are activities that support oral language, sight word recognition and spelling. Art Cards, Science and Social Studies

Art Cards We have started out Art Cards! Social Studies and Health One of the Big Ideas, a focus, for grade 2 is the diverse regions of Canada. As a beginning  to this unit we made a map of the school grounds. We then looked at Canada using google maps and zoomed in to our school. We were able to compare our map with what we saw on the screen.  Over the school year we will be looking in more detail at different regions of Canada. Over the next few weeks we will be talking about the food we grow on the Island. This will lead to conversations and comparisons with the prairies, what grows on the prairies, the animals and geography of that region of Canada.  As we are talking about food, we will be reading and retelling the story of La petite poule rousse. (The Little Red Hen). We will also be talking about healthy foods vs snack and treat food.   As we approach Halloween could you please limit candy to 1 item per day if that is your practice to include candy in your child's lunch.
